Rules of React’s useEffect

React’s useEffect is a powerful API with lots of capabilities, and therefore flexibility. Unfortunately, this flexibility often leads to abuse and misuse, which can greatly damage an app’s stability. The good news is that if you follow a set of rules designated to protect you during coding, your application can be secure and performant. No, we’re not talking about React’s “ Rules of Hooks ”, which includes rules such as:

How to Streamline Your Remote Software Engineer Onboarding

Though some fast-growing companies overlook onboarding, it’s a crucial way to ensure the legwork you’ve already put in during the hiring process pays off. Perhaps more importantly, it helps you avoid the high costs of early churn. According to Kristen Gallagher, founder and CEO of onboarding software platform Edify , it can cost upwards of $350,000 to replace an engineer if they leave before the 12-month mark. A structured onboarding system for remote developers brings more benefits than just ensuring new hires know what to do when they step through the company’s virtual doors. It’s a way to build your brand’s credibility among the dev community, increase retention, and ultimately foster sustainable growth.

6 Ways Customers Improved Their Technical Interviewing with Playback Mode

Most people can only hold a handful of things in their memory at the same time– famously 7, plus or minus 2 . (Personally, I’m lucky to hit 3). Technical interviewing requires keeping track of dozens of elements, from the logistics of conducting the interview to evaluating the code. You’re likely to lose some important details. That’s why CoderPad created Playback Mode to help you review your candidates’ code submission and rewatch how they arrived at their solution after the interview. Playback improves your ability to review the final code by letting you watch the interview back. You can do so in real time or by jumping to specific moments. (Protip: Playback skips from edit to edit, compressing any “dead” time, in turn saving you time.) This feature is also useful for reviewing an interview someone else conducted.

Why React 18 Broke Your App

You’ve just gotten done with your React 18 upgrade , and, after some light QA testing, don’t find anything. “An easy upgrade,” you think. Unfortunately, down the road, you receive some internal bug reports from other developers that make it sound like your debounce hook isn’t working quite right. You decide to make a minimal reproduction and create a demo of said hook. You expect it to throw an “alert” dialog after a second of waiting, but weirdly, the dialog never runs at all.

How to Find Great Engineering Talent in a Remote, Global Age

We’ve entered a new playing field with totally different rules when it comes to finding engineering talent. Why? Well, as you’ve almost certainly noticed, the world of work—and, of course, hiring—has lost one formerly-crucial component: location. While some might be nostalgic for the camaraderie of the traditional office and seeing fellow developers and managers day in and day out, remote is now the preferred style of work for engineers. A recent CoderPad survey found that 70% of developers want to work remotely in 2022.

Any great eng team starts with careful hiring and cultivating the right talent. Allow New Team Members to Automatically Sign Up as Interviewers

Giving candidates a positive interview experience is one of the most important components of hiring a great team. Ensuring members of your interview team can get started easily is one often overlooked step in that process. To that end, we launched Approved Domains. Approved Domains makes it easy for members of your interview team to join your CoderPad account. Much too often we heard that new interviewers had to jump through too many hoops to get set up.

How to Upgrade to React 18

React 18 is the latest in a long line of major releases of React. With it you gain access to: new features for Suspense , new useId , useSyncExternalStore , and useDeferredValue hooks, as well as the new startTransition API. While React 18 is not yet a stable release, testing out your application can be useful. Like with previous major releases of React, React 18 is a fairly easy migration for most apps. While Strict Mode has received some changes that may impact your app, and automatic batching may introduce some new edge cases, they only impact apps that don’t follow the Rules of React properly .
