Alipes Capital is a Copenhagen-based quantitative trading firm hiring highly specialized technical talent across quantitative research, trading infrastructure, energy analytics, and systems administration.
The challenge: Meeting the demand for exceptional talent in a low supply market
Many of these roles are extremely difficult to fill, making recruiting effectively continuous.
We have a demand for hiring people with specific skills and exceptional talent needed to solve the complex problems we are working on. Our learning is that there are few people in the market who are at this level, so it requires us to continuously be on the search for talent.
At the same time, Alipes receives 1,000+ applications a year for these roles. The challenge was identifying more candidates with the right skills — without creating more work for its people or technical teams.
Before CoderPad, that was time consuming and at times difficult. Technical take-home assessments were managed manually over email. Candidates worked in their own local environments and emailed their code back, leaving Alipes’ technical team to recreate those environments before they could evaluate the work.
For data-intensive quantitative exercises, differences in hardware, dependencies, and environments made it difficult to consistently reproduce measures like execution speed and memory usage. The team could find itself troubleshooting whether code would run rather than evaluating a candidate’s skills.
That manual process put a practical ceiling on how many candidates Alipes could evaluate. Alipes needed to increase the capacity of its hiring funnel.

Why CoderPad: “It was kind of a no-brainer”
Alipes evaluated a broad set of technical hiring platforms before narrowing its shortlist to HackerRank and CoderPad. The requirements spanned the organization: integration with its ATS and easier operations for recruiting; customizable Projects and automated testing for the quant team; and applicability across roles for the organization.
But ultimately, the decision came down to the product experience.
CoderPad was the better solution product-wise. So it was kind of a no-brainer.
Alipes found CoderPad more user-friendly for its people and technical teams, easier to configure, and smoother for building the sophisticated Projects its teams needed. They specifically valued the ability to create custom questions and automate the scoring.
That flexibility was critical. Alipes wasn't looking for generic software engineering questions. It needed to recreate technical work that reflected the specialized skills required inside a quantitative trading firm.
The Projects feature within CoderPad Screen gave Alipes a consistent environment in which to measure those skills — while removing the environment setup and troubleshooting that had previously consumed reviewer time.
The impact: 70% more candidates evaluated for skills
The biggest impact wasn't simply time saved. It was what Alipes could do with that additional capacity.
Pre-CoderPad vs. post-CoderPad:
+70% candidates sent a Project
+50% candidates reaching interview stage
+33% candidates reaching in-person onsite
3× faster candidate Project reviews — from 15 minutes to less than 5 minutes
0 deep-debugging cases, down from ~10% of submissions
41% less time candidates spend in the funnel waiting between Project and interview
As Alipes put it:
The average time reviewing a Project has dropped and our throughput has increased.
That combination matters for a firm whose recruiting engine is essentially always running. Alipes can evaluate significantly more candidates without requiring its technical teams to spend proportionally more time reviewing them.
Instead of internal capacity constraining the funnel, CoderPad allows Alipes to put more potential talent through a real skills evaluation and ultimately make more hires faster.
Finding the “golden nuggets” a resume scan can miss
More capacity has also allowed Alipes to rethink who gets through the top of its funnel.
Selecting candidates for quantitative roles has traditionally relied heavily on resume signals: advanced degrees, prestigious former employers, relevant experience, and technical side projects. Alipes still considers those factors, but the team describes resume screening as inherently “noisy.”
With CoderPad Projects requiring relatively little incremental effort to administer and review, Alipes can take a chance on candidates whose backgrounds aren't immediately obvious fits.
The thinking is that we’re not missing out on some golden nuggets which might have a bit of an off-resume.
The philosophy is simple: demonstrated ability can reveal talent that pedigree alone might miss.
As Alipes explained, what ultimately matters is whether someone has the interest, skill, and passion to succeed — not whether their background perfectly matches the traditional profile.
CoderPad makes it economically practical to test that hypothesis with more people.
Expansion through the organization
CoderPad initially came into Alipes to support just one team and one role. Today, its use has expanded across the firm, with teams using CoderPad Projects to hire Quant Researchers, Quant Infrastructure Engineers, Energy Analysts, System Administrators, and more.
A major reason for that expansion has been how easy CoderPad is for new teams to adopt. Teams can build Projects around the skills that matter for their specific roles without needing significant technical or operational support to get started.
That flexibility has allowed very different teams to adapt CoderPad to their own work — from quantitative coding challenges to open-ended Python data analysis and Bash and PowerShell exercises.
As teams saw the model working elsewhere in the organization, they began using CoderPad for their own hiring needs — driving organic expansion across Alipes.
More shots at finding exceptional talent
For Alipes, the value of CoderPad ultimately comes back to the problem it started with: there are fewer exceptional candidates than the firm needs to hire.
The answer isn't to lower the bar. It's to give more people the opportunity to clear it.
CoderPad has helped Alipes increase the number of candidate skills evaluations by 70%, while cutting average review time of those evaluations by 67% and eliminating the technical debugging that previously slowed reviewers down. More candidates are now making it deeper into the process: interviews are up 50%, and final-stage onsites are up 33%.
And that gives Alipes more opportunities to find the talent it is constantly looking for.
You get more people through so there’s less of a chance of missing out on great candidates, great talent. There is a major velocity benefit.
