# How Box Found Stronger Hiring Signals With CoderPad and AI

Key Highlights

- Hundreds of CoderPad interviews a month, scaled from a small pilot.
- One-click interview setup through Greenhouse and ModernLoop, removing 5–7 minutes of manual work per interview.
- An AI Assist debugging question became one of Box’s strongest early-career hiring signals.
- ~30 interns hired each year across the U.S. and Poland.

Box hires technical talent at scale across the U.S. and Poland. But after using two CoderPad competitors, its recruiting team had seen firsthand how the wrong technical hiring platform could create friction for recruiters, engineers, and candidates.

Box needed something better: a platform that could support hundreds of technical interviews a month, integrate seamlessly into its recruiting stack, and help the team adapt its interviews for the AI era.

They found it in CoderPad.

## Box was done choosing between tradeoffs

The first platform Box tried offered a seat-based model, which created constant access management issues for Box’s global engineering organization. Recruiters had to deactivate one interviewer to make room for another, and engineers could find themselves locked out right before an interview.

Box switched to another platform that solved the seat problem, but introduced new ones. Its integrations weren’t deep enough for Box’s recruiting stack, leaving coordinators to manually create coding environments and move links between systems. Candidates also had to install an extension for anti-cheating functionality.

>

We over-solved the cost issue. But in turn, it was a downgrade for both candidate experience and our interviewer experience — and recruiting, honestly.

When Box evaluated its next technical hiring platform, it considered CoderPad alongside other leading solutions. They chose CoderPad.

And adoption followed quickly: after an initial pilot, Box scaled to hundreds of CoderPad interview pads in a single month.

## With CoderPad, it just works

CoderPad connects with Box’s existing recruiting stack, including [Greenhouse](https://coderpad.io/resources/docs/interview/integrations/greenhouse/) and ModernLoop. What used to require several manual steps from recruiting coordinators became essentially one click.

>

I talked to a couple of our current coordinators, and they were like, ‘Yeah, one click. Done. Easy. That’s it.’

Previously, setting up a live coding interview could take an additional 5–7 minutes per interview. At hundreds of interviews each month, that adds up fast.

But the bigger impact is simpler: nobody has to think about the platform anymore.

>

It was such an easy plug-in that once we set it up, it just kind of went quiet — which is the best thing for us.

No seat juggling. No last-minute access issues. No extra hoops for candidates. And fewer frustrated engineers coming back to recruiting when something breaks.

That reliability has helped rebuild confidence in the recruiting process itself and improved the relationship between TA and engineering.

Having that trust restored back in our recruiting team and our recruiting process has been really big for us.

## Building a higher-signal university recruiting process

University recruiting is one of Box’s biggest use cases for CoderPad. The team hires roughly 30 interns each year across the U.S. and Poland, with about two-thirds joining engineering.

Box starts by using [CoderPad Screen](https://coderpad.io/platform/technical-screening/) to assess candidates at the top of the funnel. But rather than relying only on standard coding challenges, the team has built its own custom debugging question in CoderPad to test how candidates work through a more realistic technical problem.

Candidates who move forward then complete a two-week, Box-specific take-home project. In the final stage, they bring that same project into a live interview, walk engineers through their work, and are asked to extend what they built.

It gives Box multiple signals across the process:

- foundational coding ability
- how someone approaches a larger project
- how well they understand their own work
- how quickly they adapt to new languages and systems
- how they respond when asked to build on it live

And now, Box is using CoderPad to add another signal: how candidates work with AI.

## Box stopped asking “How do we prevent AI?” and started asking a better question

Box knows candidates have access to AI. So do its engineers.

The question isn’t whether AI should exist in the interview process. It’s how to use it without losing signal.

>

We’re a big proponent of it. We’re trying to be really intentional about how we use AI in our interview process.

For its early-career hiring process, Box built a custom TypeScript debugging question and enabled [CoderPad AI Assist](https://coderpad.io/resources/docs/interview/pads/interview-ai-assist/).

Candidates didn’t necessarily need to know TypeScript. They were told they had AI available and asked to work through the problem.

It became one of Box’s strongest signals.

>

I think that was actually probably one of the best signals for us — that question with the AI Assist on.

The reason is important.

Box had seen how easily more traditional coding questions could be solved with external AI tools. Their engineers tested it themselves: take a picture of the problem, give it to AI, and get an answer almost immediately.

The custom debugging problem was different. It included a full repo. Candidates had to navigate the codebase, understand what was wrong, use the tools available to them, and work toward a solution.

Instead of trying to eliminate AI, Box designed a better question — one where using AI still required the candidate to demonstrate real technical skill.

## Don’t bolt AI onto an old interview. Design the interview for AI.

That lesson is already changing how Box builds technical interviews.

The team isn’t simply turning AI Assist on for questions designed before generative AI became part of everyday engineering. Engineers are building new frontend and backend questions specifically with AI in mind.

The goal isn’t to see whether a candidate can get AI to produce code. It’s to see what they do with it.

Can they understand an unfamiliar codebase? Debug effectively? Evaluate what AI gives them? Know when it’s wrong? Use it to move faster without outsourcing the thinking?

That’s much closer to how engineering actually works today.

>

Having the AI Assist functionality in both live interviews and the projects has been great, just because it’s adapting with how the industry is and the AI evolution.

## A technical hiring platform Box doesn’t have to fight

Box has seen what happens when a technical interviewing platform creates more work than it removes.

With CoderPad, recruiters spend less time on interview logistics. Coordinators aren’t managing seats and links. Engineers can focus on interviewing. Candidates get a cleaner experience.

And Box has the flexibility to keep evolving how it evaluates technical talent — from custom questions to AI-enabled interviewing — as the job itself changes.

The adoption speaks for itself: from a small pilot to hundreds of CoderPad interviews a month.

## What’s next: Bringing CoderPad beyond engineering

Box is already exploring how to bring the same approach to other parts of the business.

The recruiting team is evaluating [CoderPad Qualify](https://coderpad.io/platform/qualify/) for high-volume GTM and SDR hiring, where video interviews could help the team assess more candidates efficiently while maintaining a consistent bar.

For Box, CoderPad is becoming more than a tool for running technical interviews. It’s a platform they can continue building on as their hiring process — and the skills they need to evaluate — evolve.

Megan’s review is simple:

>

It’s been really reliable for us. We’ve had almost no complaints. To not hear anything is the best thing ever.
