David Jiang, Senior Software Engineer at Airbnb, dropped in (virtually speaking, of course) to talk through his perspective as a hiring manager designing a smart and fair technical interview process. TL:DR don’t use leetcode questions. Kidding. Read on for some great insights into how this smart, experienced engineer thinks about the technical hiring process. ### [It’s time to evaluate candidates for their work – not for resume logos](https://coderpad.io/blog/product-updates/its-time-to-evaluate-candidates-for-their-work/)

I’ve been on both sides of the technical recruiting process more times than I can count. Here’s the truth: the good candidates want to show you what they can do and the good hiring managers want to see it. I’m really excited to share the new feature we’ve built that will help both candidates and companies get their wish. public take-home projects goes live today. With a simple link on a company’s Careers page, companies can make it easy for candidates to click, do a take-home project and “show” their coding skills. Suddenly the traditional resume and recruiter screen, with its ‘all tell/no show’ vibe, feels a lot less relevant. Candidates win by showing their best skills and recruiters save time while also casting a wider net. As a hiring manager, I get to quickly see who my best applicants are, sometimes even those I would have skipped based on resume alone.

### [Research Supports Moving On from Whiteboard Interviews](https://coderpad.io/blog/interviewing/interview-with-chris-parnin-mahnaz-behroozi/)

TL:DR - whiteboard interviews are terrible and measure the wrong thing so you’re definitely missing out on quality talent. We sat down with NC State researchers, Chris and Mahnaz. Here's what they had to say.

### [Take-Home Projects Are the New Resume. Here’s Why.](https://coderpad.io/blog/interviewing/take-homes-are-the-new-resume/)

Whiteboard interviews are dead; putting candidates in a cramped room with strangers breathing down their necks is not a recipe for finding the perfect talent. We can create a better hiring process. I know it and you know it too (otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this blog, right?). So how can we make it better, especially now, when it’s clear change is long overdue? It starts with prioritizing skills over degrees from fancy universities, code quality over work experience at big-name companies, and exceptional thinking over powerful personal connections. It starts with getting away from the resumes that help companies focus on the wrong things in favor of prioritizing the right way to assess candidates.

### [Inspiration from the Inside – Introducing Take-Home Projects](https://coderpad.io/blog/product-updates/introducing-take-home-projects/)

When our senior developer, Ayumi Yu, was starting out, she was having difficulty getting the developer job she wanted. She had majored in cell biology — following her parents’ dream of seeing her become a doctor — and had no formal computer science training. With her home-grown training to go by, potential employers didn’t have the vision to see how she could be successful with a degree that wasn’t software engineering or computer science.
