Great assessments focus on real-world skills.

Use realistic scenarios that reflect the job and the industry you’re hiring for. Keep questions adaptive and unpredictable. Choose engaging formats that [test problem-solving and creativity, not memorization](https://coderpad.io/blog/hiring-developers/dos-and-donts-cheating-prevention-nathan-sutter/). The right design minimizes the opportunity—and temptation—for cheating.

Below you’ll find a handy checklist to help you craft more realistic, job-relevant tech [interview tasks](https://coderpad.io/platform/coding-interviews/) and [asynchronous coding tests](https://coderpad.io/platform/technical-screening/).

## 1. Tools and environment

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Primary tools: Does the interview process allow candidates to use industry-standard tools (e.g., IDEs like VS Code)?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Secondary tools: Are relevant secondary tools and resources provided (e.g., packages, libraries, Google/StackOverflow search, AI assistants like Copilot)?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Contextual setup: Are candidates able to work in a setup that mirrors the environment they would encounter in the role (e.g., development tools, code repositories—but also communication and collaboration tools, etc.)?

## 2. Content realism

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Job relevance: Do the questions reflect tasks that are common in the role or industry?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Real-world scenarios: Are the tasks presented in a way that resembles a real-world scenario (e.g., does a coding problem reflect a real product, bug or feature)?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Problem complexity: Is the problem complex enough to simulate real-world challenges, but not so difficult that it’s unrealistic to solve in the time allotted?

## 3. Open-endedness

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Multiple approaches: Does the question allow for multiple valid solutions?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Room for creativity: Can candidates think critically and innovate in their approach, showcasing their problem-solving abilities?

## 4. Collaboration potential

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Collaborative coding: Can the interview foster back-and-forth collaboration, like in a pair programming session or in a team discussion? Can the interviewer and candidate interact, ask questions, and iterate on solutions?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Communication skills: Does the interview allow candidates to demonstrate how they communicate complex ideas and solutions, just as they would in a collaborative work setting?

## 5. Time and space

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Appropriate time limits: Are the time limits realistic for the task at hand?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Room to think: Does the format give candidates time to think and solve the problem without the pressure of a watching or controlling figure, simulating a normal work environment (e.g., can you leverage a “ [focus time](https://coderpad.io/features/focus-time/) ” feature, to give candidates screen privacy for part of the interview, and time to collect their thoughts)?

## 6. Industry & role alignment

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Specific to role: Does the question relate to the specific team or role within the company?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Connection to business: Does the question relate to the company’s business and its goals (e.g., tasks like update releases for gaming companies or stock pricing for finance firms)?

## 7. Clarity and specifications

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Clear instructions: Are the instructions clear and structured like real job specifications (e.g., Jira/Asana-style tasks)?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Imprecise requirements: Is there room to ask clarifying questions, mimicking the ambiguity often present in real-life work situations?

## 8. Realistic scenarios and problem types

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Legacy context: Does the problem account for legacy code, infrastructure, or systems that candidates may need to work with, especially for senior roles?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Freedom of choice: Does the interview allow the candidate to make technical choices (e.g., libraries, frameworks) and justify their decisions, simulating real job conditions?

## 9. Feedback mechanism

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Iterative review: Can the candidate receive feedback as the interview progresses, similar to how work is reviewed and refined in professional environments?

![✅](https://coderpad.io/assets/emoji/2705.svg) Learning opportunity: Does the candidate have the opportunity to explain their reasoning or pivot based on feedback, showing how they would adapt to ongoing projects at work?

## How to Hire for AI Fluency Now That It’s a Critical Skill

Based on the CoderPad webinar featuring Bayo Ojuri (CoderPad), Bonnie Dilber (Zapier), and Melany Austin (GoDaddy). “AI fluency” has quietly become a line item in nearly every technical job description. The problem: most teams added the requirement long before they had a reliable way to assess it. You can ask a candidate whether they use […]

## Hot Takes on Hiring: “AI Fluency” Is a Myth

Our CEO, Amanda Richardson, and our Head of Product, Frank Hauben, can’t agree on anything else. We put Amanda and Frank on camera, handed them five spicy hot takes about AI in hiring, and told them not to sit on the fence. They sat on the fence anyway. Here’s what they actually fought about. Amanda […]

## Your Developer Interview Loop Is a Year Old. Is It Still Finding Your Best Candidates?

A YC-backed founder called me last week with some good questions. His 20-person startup hadn’t hired an engineer in over a year. Now they’re opening reqs again, and instead of just dusting off the old loop, he wanted to understand how interviews had changed and if candidates were ready for AI interviews. His process — […]

## AI Fluency Is the New Technical Skill. Is Your Hiring Process Ready?

Artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed software development. Developers are no longer working in isolation, writing every line of code from memory. AI has become part of the engineering workflow, helping developers brainstorm approaches, generate boilerplate code, and debug complex issues. The question isn’t whether engineers are using AI. It’s how effectively they’re using it. Hiring […]

## AI Didn’t Kill Entry Level Hiring. Bad Screening Did.

For the last two years, the narrative has been loud, confident, and mostly wrong: AI is coming for entry level engineering jobs. The story goes something like this: If AI can write code, summarize docs, generate tests, and debug basic issues, why would companies still hire junior engineers? It sounds logical. It is also incomplete. […]

## The Resume Is Dead. Most Teams Just Haven’t Admitted It Yet.

Resumes made sense when applying for a job took real effort. That era is over. AI lets candidates apply to hundreds of roles in the time it once took to write a single cover letter. Employer-side AI systems process the flood. The result is a hiring funnel built almost entirely on artificial signals, where the […]

## Is Your Technical Hiring Process Screening Out Great Engineers?

The short answer: Many technical hiring processes are doing the latter. High-friction interview loops, live coding under observation, and AI-restrictive assessments are measuring interview performance, not job performance. The fix isn’t rebuilding from scratch — it’s auditing whether your process measures engineering capability or something else entirely. If you attended our recent webinar with CoderPad […]

## Junior Developers Are Your Strategic Advantage—If You Can Actually Evaluate Them

Campus recruiting season arrives the same way every year: hundreds of applications, a narrow window, and a process that was never designed for this much volume or this much pressure. Meanwhile, the definition of “technical skill” is actively shifting—AI-polished resumes have made traditional screening nearly meaningless, and the skills that predict junior developer success look […]
